The initial pressure and volume of a gas
enclosed in a cylinder are respectively
1 x 105 N/m2 and 5 x 10-3 m². If the work
done in compressing the gas at constant
pressure is 100 J. Find the final volume
of the gas.

Answer:

The final volume of the gas is 4×10⁻³m³.

Explanation:

The work done on the gas is given as,

W=P(V_2-V_1)        (1)

Where,

W= work done in compressing the gas

P=pressure of the gas

V₁=initial volume of the gas

V₂=final volume of the gas

From the question we have,

W=-100J       (∵ Negative sign as the gas is compressed)

P=1×10⁵N/m²

V₁=5×10⁻³m³

By substituting the values in equation (1) we get;

100=1\times 10^5(V_2-5\times 10^-^3)

V_2=-1\times 10^-^3+5\times 10^-^3=4\times 10^-^3m^3

Hence, the final volume of the gas is 4×10⁻³m³.
