reasons :

  • iron is a solid and solid have very less intermolecular spaces.
  • now among wood and iron ( both are solid) iron has lesser intermolecular spaces since its density is much higher than wood.
  • high density means more mass occupied in lesser volume which indirectly indicate smaller intermolecular spaces. hence iron has smaller intermolecular spaces than wood.
