Math, asked by Vaidehisaitwadekar, 11 months ago

I travelled from London to Glasgow last week at 60 miles per hour, I had filled my petrol tank just before I left, so it was full with 25 gallons.

Unfortunately, my petrol tank sprang a leak immediately and I only managed to drive 300 miles before I ran out of petrol.

My car does 30 miles per gallon, how fast was I losing petrol through the hole?

Given:

  • Speed of the car = 60 miles per hour

  • Capacity of petrol tank = 25 gallons

  • Total drive done = 300 miles

  • The Car goes 30 miles per gallon petrol

To find: How fast was the man losing petrol through the hole?

Solution:

The car goes 30 miles per gallon petrol

With the help of 25 gallons petrol, the car can go

= 25 * 30 = 750 miles

Speed of the car is 60 miles per hour

The car was driven only 300 miles before it went out of fuel

Uncovered distance

= 750 - 300 = 450 miles

Speed of the car is 60 miles per hour

Then to go 300 miles, it took

= 300 / 60 = 5 hours

450 miles can be covered with

= 450 / 30 = 15 gallons of petrol

Here: in 5 hours, 15 gallons of petrol was lost

Therefore losing of petrol was

= 15 / 5 = 3 gallons per hour

Answer: The man lost petrol at a capacity of 3 gallons per hour.
