I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o’er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

1. Who is the ‘I’ referred to in the first line of the extract ? To what has he been compared ? In what state of mind is he ? (3)

2. What does the poet see while wandering ? Why has he called them ‘a crowd’ ? How are they in contrast to his loneliness ? (3)

3. Give the meaning of the following lines with reference to the poem : (3)

Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

4. With reference to the above extract, state how Wordsworth can be called a nature poet (3)

5. State the difference in the mood of the poet at the beginning of the poem and at the end of the poem.

Answer:

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the milky way,

They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay:

Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance
