Amrita Sher-Gil

The credit for modernising art in India goes to Amrita Shergill. Her work display an assimilation of Indian and Western art. Amrita Shergill, who gave new dimensions to Indian art, was herself influenced by Mughal and Rajasthani style. The many art exhibitions she held gave impetus to her art. Her best known paintings are: An Ancient Story-teller, Three Virgins, The Celebate.

Amrita Shergill was born on January 30, 1913 at Budapest In 1929, she came to India and stayed in Shimla. Prior to that she had completed her education in Paris with music and painting. After a visit abroad, she came back to India in 1934. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was much impressed by her art. In 1936, she made a self-portrait which became the talk of the time. In 1938, she married Victor Allen, a Hungarian. Her married life was beset with many financial difficulties. Amrita Shergill died on 5 December 1956 at Lahore. It was an untimely demise.
