Ladies and gentlemen, I feel extremely privileged to express my views to you about the influence of environment on fashion.
It is a well-known fact that lighter, cotton garments are worn in the plains of tropical countries, just as heavy woollens are the order of the day in the cooler climes of the mountains. Seasonal changes also influence clothing; we experience this in our country especially in places where people go through extremities of weather.
Apparel designing also depends on the environment, especially in cases where natural fibres like cotton, flax, hemp, jute, rayon etc. are used. India is a cotton growing country; it is, therefore, quite expectantly a good source for cotton fibre. Cotton is mostly grown in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, but the climate and water of a region in Tamil Nadu, more specifically Coimbatore, has best suited yarn production. Similarly, a poor West African country, Burkina Faso (formerly known as Upper Volta), produces a high-quality cotton which is used for top of the line inner wear. But, the locals also wear outer garments made of the fine locally available cotton.
Silk is a very fine natural fibre, well accepted by fashionistas around the world. Sericulture, or the cultivation of silk, depends on environmental factors. The finer variety, mulberry silk, grows on mulberry trees as the silkworms producing it thrive in temperate regions. Tussar or Kosa silk is obtained from silkworms living in the wild forests, mostly in South Asia, and feeding on trees with a harder woody fibre.
I trust I have been able to explain to you, ladies and gentlemen, how fashion is influenced in a very significant way by the environment of a region.
Thank you.
