Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbalakshmi is a true role model to an infinite number of musicians. (16 September 1916 – 11 December 2004), also known as M.S., was a renowned Carnatic vocalist. She has left her rich footprints of culture on the sands of our country. She was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour. It is indeed a prestigious post. Not only that,it's a prestige to India herself. Subbulakshmi was fondly called "kunjumma" in her family. M.S. Subbulakshmi began her Carnatic classical music training under her mother Shanmugavadivu; and later in Hindustani classical training under Pandit Narayan Rao Vyas. Subbulakshmi first recording was released when she was 10 years old.

Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi popularly known as M.S.Subbulakshmi or M.S was a renowned Carnatic vocalist. She was born on 16th September 1916 in Madurai. She started learning Carnatic music at a very early age under the tutelage of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. Subbulakshmi gave her first public performance, at the age of eleven in Trichy. She later moved to Chennai ( formerly known as Madras ) and made her film debut. She also trained herself in Hindustani music and has sung many bhajans, devotional songs and hymns. She has performed in The madras Music academy and also in many other prestigious places all over the world like The Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. She was called " The Queen of music " by the then prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Her most famous works include the rendition of Bhaja Govindam, Sri Venkateswara Suprabhatham and Sri Vishnu Sahasranama. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam has also installed a bronze statue of her in the temple town. She has received a lot of accolades and awards including the Padma Bhushan , Padma Vibhushan and the most prestigious Bharat Ratna. The Kancheepuram Saree shade known as MS Blue was named after her !! She donated a lot of the prize money she received to charity. She is known for her humility and her ardent love for God and music. Her music will still continue to ring in our ears in the years to come !!
