Answer:

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Anyone who says they are not interested in politics is like a drowning man who insists he is not interested in water.”

Before I begin, let me explain what politics really is, as most of us have biased and wrong views associated with this word. When people think of politics they think of a dirty game involving corruption and unfair means but in reality, all politics is anything associated with the governance of a country or area.

We are living in the 21st century where on one hand the world is getting closer and on the other hand getting more unstable. The onus lies with the younger generation who are also the future of the country to steer the country in the right direction and on the path of progress, peace, and stability which are essential for the development of any nation. And as Dwight Eisenhower said, “Politics ought to be the part-time profession of every citizen who would protect the rights and privileges of free people and who would preserve what is good and fruitful in our national heritage.”

Unlike the olden times, the various aspects of our life like education, sports, and politics can no longer be compartmentalized as they are interlinked and interdependent . My point is that if we are given the right to vote at the age of 18 and also permitted to apply for a driving license, why can’t we take a keen interest in politics around the same age. If we are considered mature and wise enough to choose a good political leader for the country why can’t we also be interested in what’s happening on the political front of our country?

According to UN, India has the world’s largest youth population and more than 65% of the population is below the age of 35 which means that they have a major say in the politics of India and whom they want to choose as their leader. According to me, it is imperative that the youth of today has access to the political scenario of the nation and also keep abreast with ever changing political developments around the world. The students need to be well informed about their country, their constitution, their rights, and duties as well as the various political parties and their agendas, this will help them to inculcate a sense of responsibility and awareness of the societal problems. When the youth of a nation, comes together with a collective intention, it is an indomitable force.

Some may argue that getting involved in politics may interfere with one’s academic career but I would like to remind them that learning about politics alongside other subjects will ensure an overall development of the personality of the youth, it will make them well versed with the ways of the world and how to deal with various adverse situations of life, it also evokes a sense of patriotism. Today’s youth may not necessarily want to get involved in active politics however, politics play a pivotal role in the choices that they might make later on in life.

If we go back in history we realise that some of the prominent personalities who brought about a major socio- political change for the better were the youth of that time. Let me remind you that if it wasn’t for the active participation of the youth of yesteryears in politics like Martin Luther King Jr. and Bhagat Singh the history of their countries would have been very different today.

I would like to conclude my argument by saying that the youth needs to understand that they are the future of the country and they need to be aware of the policies and issues regarding the country . By ignoring politics, keeping oneself aloof from reality and turning a blind eye to the prevailing situation in the country, we are doing injustice to the future of our own nation.

And this can be summed up with the famous words of Mahatma Gandhi “I felt compelled to come into the political field because I found I could not even do social work without touching politics. I feel that political work must be looked upon in terms of social and moral progress”
