The story is about two boys who work hard to pay the bills of the hospital for their sister's treatment. These boys actually hail from a village in Italy where their widower father was killed in the early years of war. They were actually pretty rich before the war but, the war had destroyed the entire village and their house was turned into rubble due to bombings. The village was destroyed due to the war.

After the war, the boys had their sister as the only family left who was suffering from tuberculosis of the spine. This disease required a lot of money for the treatment for which the boys moved to Verona and took up odd jobs. Both the boys, despite their young age have a willingness to work and have a lot of self-respect. They do not want people to help them just out of pity as a charity case.

The narrator is a traveler who happens to visit the city with a friend when they see the boys selling berries. The narrator is impressed by the determination and the amount of work the boys do. During the end of his stay, he is willing to help them in any way possible. He then drives the boys to the village where their sister is and discovers their story from a nurse who is helping her sick sister. Respecting their decision, He does not show that he knows there heat touching story.
