Joining Rivers To Save Our Future:
Interlinking of rivers: Interlinking of rivers is a topic that has been discussed and debated for several years as a possible permanent solution to the water crisis in India.
The process involves joining rivers by tunnels and canals. This is a brilliant way of sharing water of rivers to combat droughts, floods and power shortage.
When a river in a particular region is over flooded by heavy rainfall, the water will flow through the tunnels and canals to the rivers where there is water scarcity due to droughts. This will prevent flood in one region and make water available in regions affected by drought. Since the water level or volume is restored from regions of heavy rainfall, the power supply will not be affected by water shortage. Industries will not lack power and cultivation can continue.
The three primary advantages of interlinking rivers in favour of the scheme are:
- droughts will never occur
- there will be no more floods in the major rivers and
- an additional 30,000 MW of hydropower will be generated.
India is not a water deficit country. She is blessed with many rivers and rainfall. The problem lies in unequal distribution of water by climatic and geographical conditions.
The joining of rivers will save life, prevent floods and droughts, provide constant power, and prevent lost of crops to droughts and floods. This is a pragmatic and long-term scheme. It will solve India's problems caused by either lack of rainfall or too much rainfall. It is a solution necessary for the present and also for the future generations.
Joining Rivers to Save our Future
Joining rivers is a wonderful, viable, and most practical idea to ensure water conservation and accessibility for all. Dr. Kalam had proposed this idea, but owing to lack of initiative it could not be materialized. Let’s have a look how this idea can work miracles.
In the north and north east India has world’s most abundant natural water sources in the form of The Great Himalayas. From here so many perennial rivers such as Ganga, Brahmaputra, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej, Jhelum, Chenab, etc. originate here. A reasonable amount of water can be directed towards central, south and west where there is so much of water scarcity.
Many issues can be overcome by joining rivers. For example, the flooding of river Brahmaputra causes much havoc every year. If this river is connected to other rivers in the central, southern, and western India, not only that excess of water can be drained, but water shortage problem can also be tackled.
This will lead to regeneration and revival of ground water table. The agriculture flourish leading to boom in industry and tertiary sector. The ecological imbalances in all areas and regions will be balanced. Thus through joining rivers in India a new era of prosperity and abundance will begin. The water cycle will become natural. This will lead to water conservation for the future generations. Let’s work concertedly to make this idea a reality for the welfare of the present as well as future generations.
