The term "dimensions" seems to have several meanings. 2D and 3-D are ways of refering to spatial dimensions which of course are useful for locating things in space. By space here I usually mean the space I move around in; not outer space.
Engineers use four basic dimensions. These are mass, charge, distance and time. The dimensions of speed are lengths per time. Energy has the dimensions of distance and mass multiplied together and divided by time twice. A Newton force will speed up a kilogram by one meter per second, and if it pushes for one second that's a Joule of work done.
