Answer:

On October 9th, 1920, people of Godamuri, Midnapore, West Bengal, India, gathered around a cluster of anthills to hunt demons.

Six men were armed and went up a tree to have a better view of the anthills where they believed the demons lived.

After a long frightened wait, they saw a pack of wolves coming out of the anthills.

Following the wolves, two human-like creatures appeared.

They were naked, moved on their feet and arms and they had long, matted hair.

They looked half human and half animal.

All six men reacted differently. Two of them aimed their rifles. One man told them to halt and started making notes. One buried his face in his hands.

Rev. Singh asked the men not to shoot the creatures because he saw that the children were not animals.

Later, Rev. Singh returned and dug the anthills most carefully. On digging, he discovered/uncovered two human girls, one of the around 4 years old and the other 8 years, both of them sleeping with two wolf-cubs.

Most unbelievable! How did they reach the anthills? Who left them there? How did they survive in the company of the wolves?

Rev. Singh brought them home (He should not have!) He admitted the two children in the orphanage along with other children.

Mrs. Singh began to develop human tendencies and behaviour in the two children.

She attended to them most patiently and most concerned but the two didn’t show any improvement. They drank like wolves, ate like wolves and moved like wolves.

The Singhs called the younger Amala and the elder, Kamala.

Amala could not live longer in the new surroundings. She died of kidney failure.

The following days were most painful for Kamala. She grieved her ‘sister’s’ death and spent howling all the time. Probably she was informing the wolves of Amala’s death.

Gradually Kamala began to learn, adapt and copy human life around her.

She learnt words, wore clothes and ate like humans. Most importantly, she loved Mrs. Singh and stayed with her all the time.

Once Mrs. Singh had to go away for a few days. Kamala was sad. She returned to her animal habits. She didn’t know if Mrs. Singh would return or not.

After a few days Mrs. Singh returned and Kamala ran to her most affectionately.

Kidney failure made a second visit and this time it took Kamala to her little sister’s world – a world where all are like animals. Kamala died
