Save Water, Save Life!
----------------------------------
Introduction :
“Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink”. We receive enough rainfall, have sufficient number of both perennial and seasonal rivers and underground water. Yet, we face shortage or scarcity of water. We are wrong if we think that only states like Rajasthan and some parts of Gujrat suffer from water scarcity which results in drought and famine and force women to walk for several kilometres to fetch drinking water.
Water is one of the most essential natural resource, regarded as elixir of life. Water is inseparable part of biological life and important for human existence and activities. Humans use water for various purposes. Besides drinking, bathing, washing and cooking; water is used for irrigation. It is helpful in generating electricity, hydropower. Large amount of water is required in industries and for construction of buildings and many more. About three-fourth of the Earth's surface is covered with water, but only a small proportion of freshwater can be put to use.
Some Facts and Figures :
(a) 2.7 percent is fresh water available on the Earth.
(b) Sea and Ocean are the largest water bodies in which 97.3 % of the total volume of water is found. But it cannot be used for drinking, washing and for irrigation due to high salt content.
(c) Nearly 70 percent of this freshwater occurs as ice sheets and glaciers in Antartica, Greenland and mountainous regions of the world.
(d) Only 1 percent of this freshwater is fit for human use. It is found as groundwater, as surface water in lakes and rivers, and as water vapour in atmosphere.
Scarcity of water :
Water is available in abundance and is renewable. Then, why do we suffer from water scarcity? Scarcity of water is mainly caused by Over-exploitation of water for various activities, Water Pollution, Growing population and subsequent rise in demand, Uneven distribution of rainfall, Excessive use in irrigation for growing crops for growing population. These all reasons tells us that water scarcity is created mainly by man and his activities.
Water Conservation :
We must take efforts to use available quantity of water wisely and judiciously for our growing population, their needs and activities. Hence, it is very essential to conserve and manage our water resources. Some of the ways to conserve water are :-
✦ In the household uses, consumption of water can be reduced in the following ways :
(a) We should use only the required amount of water for various activities.
(b) leaking taps should be repaired. A leaking tap wastes 1200 litres in a year.
(c) A bucket of water can be used for bathing instead of using shower or allowing flow of water unnecessarily from the tap.
(d) Recycling of wasted and polluted water can help reducing water shortage.
✦ Water Harvesting methods can be used to conserve water. Water Harvesting means to collect rainwater where it falls. Rainwater that falls on the roofs, courtyard etc. is not allowed to flow away. It is collected in dug Wells or tanks for future use with the help of pipes. This water can be used for cleaning, washing and gardening.
✦ proper irrigation Methods should be adopted to minimise wastage of water. Sprinkler can irrigate very large areas. In dry regions, where evaporation is very high, drip irrigation is very useful.
✦ Discharge of Untreated sewage, agricultural chemicals and industrial effluents are major contaminants. Water Pollution can be checked by treating these effluents, before being drained into the sewage pipes.
Conclusion :
Water is an essential requirement of man and his activities especially agriculture which is the main source of food and livilihood. Water is also essential for maintaining and supporting biodiversity and natural ecosystem. Hence, we must save water, both it's quality and quantity.
Thanks!

Water is a treasured herbal resource. It is necessary to make sure that we preserve water to make certain that this useful resource is no longer depleted. Water is integral for keeping a healthy environment and for social and financial development.
As population increases and development seeks for accelerated proportions of floor water and groundwater for the agriculture industrial sectors and domestic sectors, the stress on water sources intensifies, which leads in excessive pressure on the surroundings, conflicts among customers and tensions.
