There was a loud knock on the door. Gomati who was reading a book was startled. A voice from outside had asked her to open the door. It was her mother who wanted to tell her something. Gomati opened the door and let mother in. Like always her mother chided her for being always to herself. She was concerned that Gomati was too shy and introvert and hardly mingled with others, and she never took efforts to be open, as well. While the children in the colony where Gomati resided used to socialize very well and spend time in the evening playing and having fun, Gomati used to be immersed in books, lost and all to herself.
Gomati’s mother told her that she must pack her clothes as they would have to go Hyderabad for her aunt’s house warming ceremony. Hearing this Gomati became upset. She always felt uncomfortable mingling with others and she knew that in family gatherings she would compelled to open and mingle else others would think her as standoffish or unfriendly. Hesitatingly Gomati went to pack her clothes and the next day morning the family left to Hyderabad. At Hyderabad, Gomati and her family was welcomed by her aunt and uncle and few other relatives at the station. It was such a grand welcome with so much of chattering and chaos, and Gomati was feeling weird and out of place.
After the commotion died down, they headed to her aunt’s and uncle’s new abode. The house was centrally located in the midst of famous residential colony. The day passed away and Gomati had a tough time mingling and socialising. However she did it after pushing herself enough. The next day was the function and everyone got up early, as the function was early in the morning. It was during the function, that Gomati came across her 3 cousins whom she was meeting for the first time, as her cousins resided in the US and never had visited India for long.
The moment they saw Gomati, the three came near and hugged her dearly. Though Gomati was not used to it, she could feel the warmth and care in their hugs. She liked it. The cousins introduced themselves and asked Gomati to join them and help them in getting to know the other relatives, since they did not know many of them. Although Gomati was a shy person, she knew all her relatives very well. Gomati was not sure how she would manage it, but she began to like the cousins and readily accepted. In the course of introducing all relatives to the cousins, she slowly began to open up. Gomati suddenly realised that she was indeed liking to socialise. She thought maybe she could socialise and it was only psychological problem that her shyness stopped her.
Gomati did not realise how the entire day went in laughter, fun and happiness. She realised she was much happier and her self-confidence increased. Practicing social skills such as assertiveness, friendliness, confident body language, and conversation helped her overcome shyness and get more enjoyment from everyday experiences. From then Gomati transformed herself and took a lot of effort. She was going slow; however that was ok. But she made sure she must go forward. Stepping back from any situations that may trigger her to feel shy and could reinforce her shyness and keep it at a level that is hard to get past.
