India and Korea have been historically friends with one another. The mutual relations dates back to at least 2000 years.
In the ancient times, Buddhism was the bedrock of relationship between India and Korea. Buddhism was introduced to Korea in second half of fourth century and Koguryo was the first among the three kingdom of Korea, which received the Buddhism. During the reign of Kim Sosurim (371-384), Buddhism was officially recognized in Korea. Supposedly Buddhism reached from India to Korea via China.
According to a legend, in 48 AD, Kim Suro of Kimhae faction married to 16 year old princess of 'Ahyuta' (which was most probably the capital of ancient kingdom Kosala, Ayodhya). Archeologists discoverd a stone with two fish kissing each other, a symbol of the Gaya kingdom, that is unique to the royal family in Ayodhya. This royal link provides evidence that there was an active connection between India and Korea. There could be debate about the authenticity of the legend, but there could be no denial of the fact about Korean belief that the princess from Ayodhya married to Korean king Kim Suro, and that is significant enough to consider that India and Korea have relations from ancient times.
It also recorded that Mauryan King Ashoka sent iron and gold from India to Korea to make statues of Lord Buddha. From the eighth century onwards various Korean monks visited India. Korean monk Kyomic was the first person from Korea who visited India and studied Buddhist texts.
According to the records, many Indian monks also visited Korea. It is said that last Indian monk who visited Korea was Chikong in the early fourteenth century during the Koryo period.
