Answer:

ok

Explanation:

As assessment is a way of finding out if learning has taken place, I think it has far more advantages than disadvantages. Many of these have already been mentioned. Please find my thoughts below:

Advantages:

There are several types of assessments that take place in schools, the most common being formative (ongoing assessment e.g. quiz) This allows for progress to be checked. Summative (usually an exam and at the end of the year or course) confirms achievement (and allows for improvements and changes to be made). These provide learners with the chance to remain focussed, motivated and determined to succeed/reach their highest potential.

Additionally, we have holistic assessments, which allow teachers and educators to understand their learners not just from an assignment focus, but also understand their learning styles, trends and anything to help their learners do better. This is often great in practical courses/subjects like engineering. It can save repetition and duplication of assessments. Overall it consolidates learning.

Limitations:

Everything has to be taught beforehand

Can be time consuming

Learners may not understand why assessment is taking place so often (formative), therefore it is imperative that the teacher/educator has open conversations about assessment plans with learners andScoodle Logo

The only real disadvantage comes down to:

A) the time it takes to mark an assessment.

B) the frequency of assessments.

It goes without saying that assessments are massively important, because it gives students an opportunity to work through questions and problems that resemble the content and skills required for exams. Furthermore, it offers them an opportunity for feedback, which is paramount for building progress.

However, too many assessments means a teacher is constantly teaching towards an assessment rather than building knowledge and skills.

A good department and/or teacher is able to strike a balance. This allows the students the best opportunity for progression.
