READING COMPREHENSION

A. THINK AND ANSWER

Ans. 1 : The narrator said that he did not like the school his parents had chosen for his sister because he could not get a chance to keep an eye on her at school and make sure that she behaved well. Also, since his sister went to a ‘progressive’ school, she thought that she knew more than the narrator, which annoyed him.

Ans. 2 : The narrator’s sister played a trick while explaining to him what passive voice is. She gave an example of how they could answer in the passive voice if their mother asked them whether they had finished their milk or not. The answer “the milk has been finished” would not indicate who had finished their milk and both of them would be saved from their mother’s anger. However, when their mother really asked that question, the narrator’s sister answered in the “active” voice, on purpose, then she also justified her choice and ran off to play, leaving the narrator angry and betrayed.

Ans. 3 : Gia was the narrator’s classmate, whom he did not like because of her domineering nature. Every time the teacher asked a question in the class, Gia would respond over-enthusiastically, without giving anyone else a chance to answer. Moreover, she always got the answer right. Whenever she stood up, her thick hair plaits irritated the narrator, who was sitting close by. Along with that, she also made fun of the boys of the class with her friend Pia.

Ans. 4 : Gia and Pia, both had their hair tied into plaits – Gia’s thick and Pia’s were thinner. Niks and the narrator got a mischievous idea and tied the two girls’ plaits together during the Grammar period. As a result of this, when Gia got up to answer, she unknowingly pulled Pia’s plait along. This act hurt not just Pia but Gia too, as Pia’s head hit her chin. The boys did it because they were irritated with the way the girls’ plaits kept hitting or tickling them.

Ans. 5 : The point that ‘Grammar repeats itself, like History’, is illustrated throughout the story as the entire narrative revolves around Grammar. Initially, the narrator had a discussion with his bossy sister about Grammar, Question tags, in particular, following which an exercise on the same topic revealed itself to him as his homework. The next evening when he and his sister had a discussion on the passive voice, he found out that the same topic was being dealt with, at school, in his Grammar class.

Ans. 6 : The author was happy that his sister did not go to the same school as him because he felt that if she did, Gia and Pia would have had a very bad influence on her. Along with that, we also understand that the narrator was happy that he got to learn so much because of the sharing of knowledge by his sister, although he did not say so. Eventually, by the end of the story he changed his opinion and decided that his parents had taken a good decision by getting his younger sister admitted to a ‘progressive’ school.
