Alagu Chowdhari is one of the protagonists of this story.He is a village moneylender and runs a business along with his friend,Jumman Sheikh.He has not acquired much learning.Though not a scholar,he is respected in the village for his wealth.
He is a loyal and trustworthy friend.He is kind and sympathetic.When Jumman's aunt comes to him with her moving story,he feels pity for her.
He is not stern and miserly like other typical moneylenders but is lenient in his dealings.Even when he sells his ox to Samjhu Sahu,he allows him a month's time to make the payment.
Alagu has a sense of fairness and justice and after hearing Jumman and his aunt,he cross-examines Jumman in a way, Jumman had never expected.The verdict he pronounces shows his preference for truth and justice over friendship.
He lacks self-control.When he does not receive the price of his bullock,his patience gives away.When Sahu speaks sharply to him,he loses his temper. When Sahu's wife tries to attack him,he,irrespective of her womanhood,hits her hard for he cannot control his anger.
