INTRODUCTION:

Turkey; the birthplace of the Ottoman Empire, is a country full to the veritable brim with ruins and history, sun and lizards and not forgetting mountains. This country could well be the ultimate holiday destination, and the one that will keep calling you back to visit again.Its capital is ANKARA [Istanbul] and currency is Turkish Lira.Its the unique city’s old town is in Europe but the majority of Turkey’s largest, and most cosmopolitan, city is in Asia.

BODY: 

A boat trip down the Bosphorus and Golden Horn is a must to get a real sense of the city. You can either do an organised trip with commentary or hop on one of the cheap ferries which can take you to various stops across and along the water.The Grand Bazaar is one of the the biggest indoor markets in the world – and you buy handmade carpets there as well as saffron, at a fraction of the English price, and Turkish Delight, laden with pistachios.Within five minutes walking distance you can visit the atmospheric Basilica Cistern (an underground Roman water system), Topkapi Palace, which was once home to the Ottoman Sultans and now a huge museum, and the Hagia Sophia Museum which was once a church and mosque.The Blue Mosque is across the Hippodrome from the Hagia Sophia, and although still a place of worship, you can visit and see the historical interior.But the main thing about Istanbul is it is a great city to walk around and just explore.
