Important 8 Marks Questions

1. Human beings often become dehumanized in the face of greed and minor material gains. Elaborate with the reference of the play - The Dear Departed

Undoubtedly, Houghton’s ‘Dear Departed’ is a satire on man’s greed and hypocrisy. The vice of materialism has dehumanized human beings. According to the playwright the state of human relations in the current times is quite grim! The once quite healthy and robust relations have become quite tenuous! The canker that has undermined the strength of human relations is materialism.

The morals have gone so down that prime purpose of man's existence is pecuniary pursuits. Man has stooped so low that he sacrifices even the most sacred relations for the sake of material gains. Gone are the days of brotherly, sisterly, fatherly, or motherly love. Man can break all ties of love and respect for the sake of money and property! All ethics, etiquette, decency, and decorum have gone to dogs. Life has become merely trade, commerce and profit earning.

So wherever man finds some financial gain or advantage, he honors those relations. The rest is least said the better! The play 'Dear Departed' beautifully depicts this degradation of human moral values. The story is an apt satire on human selfishness, greed, and follies. Slaters and Jordans actually represent all the men and women of the modern society who are devoid of filial affections, and responsibilities. Abel Merryweather was wronged and hurt by the vices of his own daughters. They treated to him like a stranger! They considered him dead and rushed into division of his property with him lying asleep in his room! They neither went to his room to have a close look at him; nor sent for a doctor to have him examined! This was travesty of filial relationship. No doubt, their relationship ended so suddenly!

At the end, Abel Merryweather taught a befitting lessons to his greedy family members.

2. How can we say Roman crowd was fickle-minded?

It is quite true Roman crowd in the play Julius Caesar has been depicted as fickle-minded. At the beginning of the play the crowd was all praise for Caesar. After hatching the conspiracy to assassinate Caesar, the conspirators won Marcus Brutus to their side as the Roman people loved him and Caesar’s assassination could be justified with Brutus on their side; as expected the Roman crowd did not react to Caesar’s assassination.

When Brutus gave public explanation about Caesar’s assassination, the crowd praised Brutus and his conspirators and judged the assassination as justified. However, after Brutus’s speech, when Antony brought truth and proofs of Caesar’s greatness in front of the Roman crowd, it felt Caesar had been wronged. Antony succeeded in inciting the crowd against the conspirators. Thus, we see the fickle-minded nature of Roman crowd.

3. Nicola and Jacopo selfless action brought new nobility to human life. Explain the value learnt from them .

It is true that Nicola and Jacopo’s self-less actions and love for their sister, Lucia brought new nobility to human life. Their divine deeds teach the readers and the entire mankind many values. They were the epitomes of selfless-love. Only angels could work like them; they were living for their sister only. The author was stunned at their maturity; their patience; their pride in themselves!

The author had begun to lose hope in humankind. But when he saw the service, dedication of those two little angels, he was again hopeful of humankind. If the world had such more little angels living in all parts of the world, this earth would soon be transformed into paradise!

4. Woman thy name is jealousy. Although in modern times this statement sounds discriminatory.  Do you think it is true in the case of relationship between Mrs Packletide and Loona Bimberton ?

‘Woman thy name is jealousy’ sounds quite old fashioned in the modern times as women have evolved into far better beings than what they used to be in the past. However, in the relationship between Mrs. Packletide and Loona Bimberton, jealousy was the main element.  She had to suffer so much on account of her jealousy. We see how Mrs. Packletide’s  jealousy to outshine Loona Bimberton ends up in her shame, embarrassment, and financial loss. She is left with nothing but regret and remorse. The author has masterfully brought home the point that jealous people like her don't get anything useful in their lives; their jealousy bears no sweet fruit. On the contrary they have to bear loss on all fronts. Miss Mebbin's act of extorting a huge sum of money at the end of the story must have given Mrs Packletide a lot of pain. It must have deprived of all the joy and peace she must be feeling after the tiger hunt. What an irony of circumstances!
