When the light ray passes from rarer medium to denser medium it bends towards the normal. Example: Light ray passing from air to glass (Air rarer medium, Glass - denser medium.Rare medium has the low density and the dense medium has the high density. In case of air and water, water has the high density than that of air. So air is rarer and water is denser.

RARER MEDIUM
It having the refractive index smaller than 1. Its refractive index is greater than or equal to 1. Rare medium has the low density.
Velocity of light increase in rarer medium.
Ex:Air.
DENSER MEDIUM
Light will deviate away from the normal. Light will deviate towards the normal of incidence.
Denser medium has high density.
Velocity of light decreases in Denser medium.
Ex:Water.
