Abstract

Air pollution results from both natural (e.g., fires, volcanoes, and wind-blown dust) and man-made sources. The particles and gases that comprise air pollution are known to cause adverse health effects in humans. Importantly, subpopulations of individuals such as the elderly, children, and people with heart or lung disease (e.g., asthmatics) have been shown to be more susceptible to inhaled ambient pollutants. To reduce the disease burden related to ambient air pollution, regulations have been promulgated in most developed countries throughout the world and mounting evidence from epidemiology and toxicology studies suggests that reductions in air pollution concentrations yield improvements in associated health outcomes.
