Taking Care our Planet
Nani Palkhiwala, the author of the chapter, 'The Ailing Planet: The Role of Green Movement', describes the patient-like condition our planet because of man’s reckless and inconsiderate exploitation of Mother Nature. He presents alarming facts and figures that compel us to take a serious look at the causes of our fast dying planet. He appeals to all of us to conserve and preserve our planet’s natural resources before it is too late.
Aldo Leopold wisely remarks, “Conservation is a state of harmony between man and environment." Conservation is not an option; it is the only direst necessity. Without it, man may jeopardize his own survival. Our natural resources are not only precious, they are invaluable! Man has been so much engrossed in his progress and prosperity; he does not have time to see the irreparable damage that he is doing to the health of planet earth.
Trees are the base and foundation of life. Before God created man, he created trees. Trees are man’s source of life. they are his life-support-system. Trees are beneficial to man in many ways. Trees reduce air temperature by blocking sunlight. Further cooling occurs when water evaporates from the leaf surface. The conversion of water to air vapor --- a chemical process --- removes heat energy from the air. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, from the air and release oxygen.
The present rate at which the trees and other natural resources are being used is quite alarming. The rate of consumption is faster than the rate of their natural replenishment. If the rate of consumption is not reduced, soon all the natural resources will be used up. There won't be left anything for the coming generations. Now the question arises; "Are we to leave a scorched planet to the coming generations?" We will be called highly selfish generation, if we don't leave any natural resources for the future generations. We need to put our acts together. We must follow the principles of sustainable development. We must allow nature to replenish its resources.
