On a resistance usually, we have 4 circular color bands on the cylindrical surface of the body of resistance. These colors represent a digit. From left side, the first three colors bands represent the digits as follows. The fourth color band to the extreme right represents the exponent for 10, which multiplies the the 3 digit number , to give final resistance value.
There is also a 5th digit that usually gives the tolerance for the resistance. That is the (maximum) error percentage in the value of resistance.
=========================================================
color value of digit for 4th band tolerance % given by
the first 3 digits multiplier the 5th color band
==========================================================
Black 0 10^0 = 1 ohm 0 %
Brown 1 10^1 ohm 1 %
Red 2 10^2 ohms 2 %
Orange 3 10^3 = 1 k ohm
Yellow 4 10^4 = 10 kOhms
Green 5 10^5 = 100 k ohms 0.5 %
Blue 6 10^6 = 1 mega ohm 0.25 %
Violet 7 10^7 = 10 mega ohm 0.10 %
Grey 8 10^8 0.05 %
White 9 10^9
==============================
Gold - 0.1 = 10^-1 ohm 5 %
Silver -- 0.01= 10^-2 ohms 10%
================================
Let us say the left most color is Red, then yellow, then violet. then orange. Then silver bands are there on the resistance, in the lab.
value of resistance is : 247 * 10^3 ohms with a tolerance of +- 10%
ie., the resistance is with in the range of : 247k ohms - 24.7 kohms to 247 kohms + 24.7 kohms.
There is also a 5th digit that usually gives the tolerance for the resistance. That is the (maximum) error percentage in the value of resistance.
