Tobacco smoke contains more than 70 chemicals that cause cancer.[3] Tobacco also contains nicotine, which is a highly addictive psychoactive drug. When tobacco is smoked, nicotine causes physical and psychological dependency. Cigarettes sold in underdeveloped countries tend to have higher tar content, and are less likely to be filtered, potentially increasing vulnerability to tobacco smoking related disease in these regions.[4]

Tobacco use is the single greatest cause of preventable death globally.[5] As many as half of people who use tobacco die from complications of tobacco use.[3] The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that each year tobacco causes about 6 million deaths (about 10% of all deaths) with 600,000 of these occurring in non-smokers due to second hand smoke.[3][6] In the 20th century tobacco is estimated to have caused 100 million deaths.[3] Similarly, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes tobacco use as "the single most important preventable risk to human health in developed countries and an important cause of premature death worldwide."[7] Currently, the number of premature deaths in the U.S. from tobacco use per year outnumber the number of workers employed in the tobacco industry by 4 to 1.[8] According to a 2014 review in the New England Journal of Medicine, tobacco will, if current smoking patterns persist, kill about 1 billion people in the 21st century, half of them before the age of 70.[9]

Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart, liver and lungs. It also causes peripheral arterial disease and high blood pressure. The effects depend on the number of years that a person smokes and on how much the person smokes. Starting smoking earlier in

As the second largest cause of death in the world, Tobacco has put itself at the top of social problems. Looking though out history, tobacco was widely accepted in American society as well as all around the world. There were three major changes in society that aided in the transformation of tobacco from a social norm into a major social issue. The major changes of technology enhancement of cigarette production, society’s views on tobacco intake, and the improvements of scientific knowledge on health issues tobacco causes have all led to the social problem tobacco has formed.

Tobacco is native to both North and South American continents and is considered one of the most important cash crops in the United States. European explorers from the fifteenth and sixteenth century discovered tobacco through the Native Americans who used the resource as medicine and as a hallucinogen. The plant was brought back to Europe where it instantly became a drug of choice. Rulers quickly banned tobacco, but its economic benefits and vast popularity compelled acceptance. It spread throughout the flourishing world and became the foundation for the growth of the American economy. Colonist started to grow and sell their own product; it became so important that tobacco was a legal currency in Maryland and Virginia. Because tobacco became a high paying farm crop, the rapid growth of production led to an increase of slave trade. Slaves became the backbone of the tobacco economy.

Electronic cigarettes are another alternative which help people quit smoking. Smoke-free, e-cigarettes have batteries instead of tobacco, cartridges instead of nicotine, water vapour instead of smoke. Though NRT and e-cigarettes have been shown to almost double your chances of successfully quitting smoking, they are not the ultimate solution.
