I was walking alone in a cool winter midnight. The streets were deserted. Suddenly I heard the echo of footsteps in the silence of the night. I was scared! ‘Who could it be? A watch man, police, someone like me going home late at night or …some criminal following me?’ thought I. I started walking more briskly. My home was still a few hundred meters away. I thought of scramming for help; but then decided against it as everyone had gone to bed by that time. There was no soul around. People were fast asleep in their snug rooms.
As I began running towards my house, I felt the footsteps behind me moving swiftly towards me. I saw the outline of a tall man with cap moving rapidly towards me in the dark of the night. As I ran faster, the voice of the man following me shouted: ‘Stop! Or I will shoot you!’ Scared terribly I stopped. The man came closer to me! As he came closer, I saw in the light of the nearest lamppost that he was a cop. He said, ‘What are you doing outside so late in the cold night? I suspected you were either a criminal or a terrorist. If you had not stopped, I would have fired at you.’ I told him I was returning home after attending a friend’s birthday party. I showed him my identity card and showed him my house too. The cop escorted me to the house and wishing me good night went away.
Within a few seconds, my mind had imagined wildest options in which either I was swallowed by the creature or captured to a strange world in which many of his kind lived and ruled. I started mind mapping my strategic plans to escape the giant winged chameleon.
In my fear, I took a wrong road and I found myself walking along the river Kinna which flowed on the other side of my house. Soon, I could make out that due to my train of thoughts I had followed a wrong path and what lay before me was the swift river with its crafty current. On the other side, there was this strange creature who was slowly casting a numbing effect on my senses. I tried to shout for help, but my throat seemed to be choked. I was almost on the verge of fainting when my father came and held me in his embrace. I was, according to my doctor, actually suffering from the sleepwalking disorder and it was a sort of hallucination due to my sickness The incident occurred almost six months back and thanks to my doctor that such weird experiences never reoccurred in the best of my knowledge. To my doctor, it was just my weird imagination or hallucination, but I know even today that it was as real as my own breathing.
