I was watching the bridge and the African looking country
of the Ebro Delta and wondering how long now it would be
before we would see the enemy, and listening all the while for
the first noises that would signal that ever mysterious event
called contact, and the old man still sat there. what is this paragraph meaning​

The paragraph means- The author (ernest hemingway) was a war correspondent in this spa ish war , which took place on the ebro delta.. So he describes his experience. that - He saw an old man , who sat over the pontoon bridge.He thought that after how much he would the enemy, he would have to listen the noises in the war. In the end he says that he was still there ..which means that all others had gone.. only he was left.. but he was too tired to any furthur though the author helped to get up.

the soldier looked towards the bridge which now looks like an african country of elbro delta and was thinking how much time is remaining before we could see the enemy and listening to the noises in the war that will signal to the event which is going to take place. But the old man doesn't care and still sat there.
