Answer:

As a commercial fisherman, the first time I caught a fish in a gillnet I felt a little bad for it.

Gillnetting is a savage way to harvest fish. The mesh size on a gillnet is wide enough for a fish to swim into the net and get caught by its gills. The harder it tries to get out, the worse it makes it for itself. Then, when the net is reeled back on board the boat, each fish has to be picked out of the net. On a commercial operation you have to move fast, and you pick those fish out of the net in the most efficient form possible, which is to say brutally. Then you tear its gills to bleed it, drop it on deck to die, and keep going.

I continued to feel a little sorry for every fish I caught after that, till a life changing event happened: I witnessed my first mort, or dead, floating, rotten salmon.
