The iron when comes in contact with air tends to develop rust. This is the reason that all iron objects are coated with paint so that the surface does not come in contact with air and do not develop rust on it. The rust formed on the iron is called as Ferric oxide and can bring down the durability of the material. So paint is the best way to avoid rust.
