When metal of iron is placed freely in air then it reacts with moisture of air. So the iron gets corroded and rust is appears on it. To overcome this problem thick layer of paint, oil or grease is applied on it.It prevents corrosion because air with moisture does not enter in it. This process is called galvanisation.

Explanation:

Oil not only lubricates metal parts and allows them to move with less friction, but oil also forms a protective barrier against rust. The principle here is pretty simple; with a coating of oil, moisture can't react with the iron in the metal and cause rust.20-Feb-2020
