(i) what is the correct way of preparing dilute sulphuric acid?
Answers
Answer:
Fill a container about half way or more with distilled water, add the acid and then bring up to the volume with more water. In the example above, fill a flask with about 150 mL or more with distilled water, add 6.9 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid, then continue to dilute with water to the 250 mL mark.
The correct way of preparing dilute sulphuric acid is as follows -
• Dilute sulphuric acid = Water + Sulfuric acid.
• Now, it is obvious that we have to mix water and sulphuric acid with each other to make dilute sulphuric acid.
• Now,there are two ways of mixing :
1) Mixing water into sulphuric acid.
2) Mixing sulphuric acid into water.
• Among, the above mentioned two ways, the first way is not preferable because, when we add water in the concentrated sulphuric acid, a high amount of heat is created and there are chances of explosion due to heat generation.
• Now, if we slowly add some acid into water, the major water portion will absorb the generated heat which prevents explosion and we can safely prepare sulphuric acid.
That's why the correct way to prepare diluted sulphuric acid is to add sulphuric acid slowly into the water.
