I) The poet refers to the fact that the goldfinch's barred face is her identity marker, it is through the distinctive markings on her face which make it look like there are bars across its face that we can identify the goldfinch as it comes out of the branches.

ii) In the city, the friendship between the old lady and the little grandson came under strain. She was disturbed because she could not go with him to school, nor help him with his lessons.

iii) The poet gets surprised when he gets an answer from the rain, as it is inanimate and cannot speak. In this poem, to the poet's and reader's amazement, the rain gives a reply which has been translated by the poet for the readers.
