If it is from chapter 'a theifs story'
the thief wanted to become an educated man because when Anil started teaching him how to write and read his name and other sentences, he was delightful and curiosity of knowing more was developing inside him. He also got the difference between a thief and an educated man. He knew that an educated man has more respect in the society.
