Indirect/Reported Speech refers to speech being said to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: She said,"I am reading a book." (Direct)

She said that she was reading a book. (Indirect/Reported)

In the above example, when writing in reported/indirect form, the sentence changes according to its tense. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'may' changes to 'might', 'will' changes to 'would', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'you' changes to 'I' and many other words will have to be made.

I will be late from school today. (Direct)

I would be late from school that day. (Indirect/Reported)

Hope it helps :)
