Gandhi always wanted the non-cooperation movement to remain non violent in nature. But to due severe British repressions towards Indians associated with the movement and the follow up of agitated mob by burning a police station with policemen inside in Chauri- Chaura (Gorakhpur District, UP) led Gandhi to believe that people were not yet ready and had not yet fully understood the method of non violence. Hence, he suspended the Non cooperation movement
