let the first part be x
therefore second part=56-x
three times first part =3*x=3x
1/3rd of second part =(56-x)/3
according to the question
3x-(56-x)/3=48
or,9x-56+x=144
or,10x=144+56
10x-200. or, x=20
therefore first part =20. and
2nd part =(56-20)=36

answer is 20and 36

Hey Mate ,
Here is the answer ,______________________________________________________________

Let the numbers be x and 56-x .

3x -  1 (56-x)  = 48
        3

9x - 56 + x = 144

10x - 56 = 144

10x = 200

x = 20

56 - x = 56 - 20 = 36

The two numbers are 20 and 36.

Therefor option (a) is correct.
