I woke up my eyes and saw a pigeon, shivering with cold, was sitting on my window, I slowly walked towards my window and raised the window gently, so that it might not be frightened away. The pigeon raised its brown head in a half scared way, turned it to this side and to that. Then after looking first at the comfortable chamber and then away at the snow-covered earth, quietly hopped upon the sill inside.
"O, poor, dear bird", I said. Then I dressed myself quickly, and went downstairs for some crumbs of bread, which I scattered on the floor. The pigeon picked them up, with scarcely a sign of fear.
As soon as it had eaten up all the crumbs, it flew back towards the window. Resting on the sill, it swelled his glossy throat and cooed its thanks to me. Then it darted away, the morning sunshine glancing from its wings.
A feeling of disappointment crept into my heart as the bird swept out of sight. "Poor little darling!" I sighed. "If he had only known how kind I would have been, and how safe it was here, what nice food and pure water would have been given, it wouldn't have flown away".
