I would like to know.. Why does xylem only transport water upwards??

Xylem tissues collects the water from the roots and transports it to other parts of plant for there needs It transports water upwards only as the materials are useful to all the parts of the plant and the roots are located below so only their is a need to transfer food upwards whereas in phloem tissues the food in made in leaves and as it is importantfor each organ to get the food so it is transported both upwards and downwards Also xylem tissues are there to transfer water and minerals only (I hope of is clear)
