(i) Write the electron-dot structures for sodium, oxygen and
magnesium
Show the formation of Na2o, and Mgo by the transfer of electrons.
(iii) What are the ions present in these compounds?

1)When the valence electrons are represented as dots circling the elements it is known as the elemental structure with electron –dot. Thus for option i) we can write Sodium (2, 8, 1) = Na with one electron at the top. ... In Na2O, Na+ and O2- ions are present and in MgO, Mg2= and O2 (2- ) ions are present.

3) The ions present in Na2O are sodium ions (2Na+) and oxide ion O2-. The ions present in MgO2 are magnesium ion (Mg²+) and oxide ion O²-.

4) The strong force of attraction between oppositely charged ions means that ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points. When dissolved in water ionic compounds form a solution in which ions can move. This means that these solutions can conduct electricity.
