The representation of valence electrons around the chemical symbol of Elements is known as Electron dot structures (or) Lewis structures. To draw Electron dot structures you should know the number of valence electrons of the particular element.
(ii)
a] Na₂S
Sodium has 1 valence electron where as Sulphur has 6 valnece e⁻. To attain stability one Sulphur atom wants 2 more e⁻ and one Sodium atom has to lose 1 e⁻. So when each sodium atom loses one e⁻ . The lost electrons are gained by one sulphur atom . By this both the Sulphur atom and two Sodium atoms attain stability.
b] MgCl₂
Magnesium atom has 2 valence e⁻ and Chlorine atom has 7 valence e⁻. To attain stability each chlorine atom needs one e⁻ and Magnesium should lose 2e⁻. Now the electrons which are lost by one Magnesium atom are gained by two chlorine atoms , By which both the species acquire stable electronic configuration.
(iii) a] Ions present in Na₂S are two positive charges ,Sodium ions (Na⁺ , Na⁺ ) and one negatively charged ion Sulphur ion (S²⁻)
b] Ions present in MgCl₂ are Magnesium dipostive charge ion (Mg²⁺) and two negatively charged Chlorine ions (Cl⁻)
