Answer:

1) 16

2) 12

Step-by-step explanation:

Using giving statements we can make equations

For 1)

Let my toffes be y and friends be x (value of y= my toffees= 53)

so equation is 3x+5=y which is 3x+5=53

solving for  x we get x=16

For 2)

Let fathers age be n and mine be m (father age=42)

so equation is 3m+6=42

therefore my age when solving for m=12

Answer:

i) No. of toffees your friend is 14

ii)Your age is 12

Step-by-step explanation:

i) Let the no. of toffees your friend has be x

Then the number of toffees you have will be 5+ 3x (in Variable)

Equation:-

5+3x=53

3x=53-5

3x=48

x=48/3

x=14

ii) Your age is m

Father’s age is 6+3m (in Variable)

Equation:-

6+3m=42

3m=42-6

3m=36

m=36/3

m=12
