The reason for floating of ice on water with respect to hydrogen bonding is -

  • In ice hydrogen bonds provide stability and thus makes them loose their mobility. This further prohibits their interaction with other water molecules.
  • Moreover, to accomodate the distance of hydrogen bonds and other bonds, molecules grow apart giving them more space. This causes loss in their density and hence it floats.
