ICMP is crucial in IPv6 for path MTU discovery (ie “finding the largest size packet that all routers on a path can carry”). This is somewhat of a hurdle for IPv6 adoption as firewalls, enterprise network administrators, and occasionally even ISPs have a bad habit of wholesale dropping all ICMP traffic.
