The Patriot is a poem written by Robert Browning in which he tells about the hypocrisy of people.
EXPLANATION:
- In the poem, the poet tells the story of a person who came to be in power and at first he was hailed by the public and his countrymen. All of the people were at top of their houses showering roses over him as he was returning home as a victor and as a patriot.
- He says that people were so happy that they were swinging themselves like they have gone mad and lost their sense. It shows the overwhelming response of the people for the patriot. But, then time changes, it has been a year since he was welcomed home as a patriot.
- But, now people hates him because they think that he has not done enough for them. The same people who showered flowers at him at now throwing shoes and stones at him. And, now they also wants him to be punished for this.
- And, for the punishment the people there had tied his hands on his back and they are carrying him to the slaughterhouse where they want to kill him. The narrator's only refuse is now with God because he knows that he has done good for his people and would reward him accordingly.
- The poet had showed how people changes when someone is in power and how greedy humans can be.
