Icy, small, solar system body having a tail is called a comet. when passing close to the Sun, the comet warms and begins to release gases. It also produces a tail. These phenomena are due to the effects of solar radiation and the solar wind acting upon the nucleus of the comet. Comet nuclei range from a few hundred meters to tens of kilometers across and are composed of loose collection of dust, ice and small rocky particles. If sufficiently bright, a comet may be seen from the Earth without the help of a telescope. Comets have been observed and recorded since ancient times by many cultures.
Comets usually have highly eccentric elliptical orbits, and they have a wide range of orbital periods, ranging from several years to potentially several millions of years. As of November 2014, there are 5253 known comets and the number is steadily increasing as they are being discovered.
One of the well known comet is Halley's comet, which can be seen once in every 76 years. It was last seen in 1986.

A comet is an icy, small, Solar System body having tail.
A comet is a celestial object that consists of a nucleus (a solid core of frozen water, frozen gases, and dust) and moves around the sun, generally at a great distance from it.
They (Comets) are sometimes called "dirty snowballs" or "icy mudballs".
