(b) Neutralises excess acid.

Antacid is normally a strong base [Mg(OH)2] which neutralizes excess acid. Acidity is mainly due to the excess secretion of HCl from oxyntic cells.

More:-

Lining of stomach has mucosa which protects it from being corroded by HCl.

There are also some functions of HCl.

  • First, it provides an acidic medium to the food (food gets converted into chyme).
  • Second, it eliminates harmful bacteria present in the food.
  • Third, it facilitates the functioning of pepsin.

Thus, the pyloric sphyncter muscle provides the chyme to the small intestine for further digestion.
