As we refer to Warm, while referring to to a person' s personality....we mean that she/he is a good nature and kind person ....here cold means the OPPOSITE.

The poet want to say through the poem that in the cold winter night, the strangers could have saved their and others life if they all could have used used the wood to start fire ,even if one of them....they could have taken the warmth..

But as said in the poem... the people were stereotyped, they didn't helped each other just because they discriminated among themselves.... they didn't helped each other and died.

So the cold was outside too... but the major reason for their death is the cold that was inside them...ie. the stereotype in their mind, because it made them hate each other without a reason , which ultimately Led to their death.
