The Greeks contributed to western political thinking in a huge way. The introduced the ideas of democracy and became the first democracy. They followed direct democracy. This democracy though, didn't last long. After the deformation of the Roman Republic and formation of the Roman Empire, democracy was forgotten but some ideas were still there. So then after the American War of Independence was won by the americans, they decided to form a democracy.
