Answer:

(i) C6H5CH2Br + KCN  →  C6H5CH2CN

C6H5CH2CN + H3O+  →  C6H5CH2COOH

A = C6H5CH2CN = Benzyl cyanide

B = C6H5CH2COOH = Phenylacetic acid

(ii) CH3CHO + CH3MgBr  →  CH3-CH(O-Mg-Br)-CH3

Note: (O-Mg-Br) is attached to carbon 2, Oxygen carries a negative charge and Magnesium carries a positive charge

CH3-CH(O-Mg-Br)-CH3  + H2O  →  CH3-CH(OH)-CH3

A = CH3-CH(O-Mg-Br)-CH3 = Alkoxide

B = CH3-CH(OH)-CH3 = 2-Propanol
