Cognition means relating to mental processes like thinking. So, the cognitive milestones that can be expected from a 5 year old include:

1. Being able to identify basic colours. At this stage colour identification is limited to major colours like red, blue, green, black, white, yellow, and not shades like peach, beige, etc.

2. Being able to state one's name and speak one's address in a coherent manner. The child understands the meaning of 'address' as the place of residence, and not just a memorised piece of information.

3. Being able to make a choice. The child can process the options and effectively choose one option.

4. Being able to identify the letters of the alphabet and numbers upto 10, and speaking them in the right order.
